Racism and ignorance clearly evident in our society, as experienced by my friend’s sister. This is what her potential dorm roommate, whom she had never met or talked to before, tweeted about her.
"Today I googled my last name and found this as one of the search results. Apparently, just by looking at my profile picture, I am Indian and I can barely speak english. This, my friends, is a prime example of racial profiling. I am an American citizen. I was born in Houston, Texas. My roots are not from India but from Africa. My parents are Algerian. I am Algerian American. English is my primary language and it is a struggle for me to speak my parent’s native tongue. My name is pronounced exactly as it is spelled. I wear a hijab (a head covering), and not a niqab ( a facial covering that excludes the eyes) though I do admire, respect, and find the beauty in all those who do choose to wear the niqab. But this girl is right, I probably would have had a heart attack living with a person who could not, and refused to, respect me and my beliefs. I can only thank God for an opening of a single room shortly after they assigned this roommate, way before I knew she had posted any of this. Alhamdullilah. I also thank God for being born in Houston, one of the most multicultural cities in the United States, and not experiencing racism like this everyday of my life. Sunday is my move in day and the start of my college career. This can be nothing but a good sign for the years to come, inshaAllah. In conclusion, I urge everyone, please, don’t judge a person by their appearances. Racism exists in this nation because we continue to do so. We have to look beyond the covers of appearances and read the texts of their characters. Stand with me and ‪#‎stopracism‬.” -Roukaya Mabizari

Thank God Roukaya Mabizari doesn’t have to deal with that punchline as a room mate anymore.

"جان‎/jan/jān/jaan [jaan]"

(noun) Jan/jaan is one of those specials words which lends itself across cultures and languages as a term of endearment and affection meaning, love, dear, heart, and life in East Asia. Arab/Persian: In Arabic, jan represents beloved one or dear. The Persian origins of this word mean life, equivalent to the Punjabi and Hindi definition. Calling a person your jaan, in comparison to the Arab and Persian culture, in South East Asian countries is an act of true love and intimiacy, and not used as liberally as the Persian connotation. Its true origins stem from Sanskrit. In Urdu you often refer to your lover and those your are close to as “meri jaan [meh-ree jaan],” also meaning my life, and my dear. It has a deeper emotional meaning than merely calling someone your love, or sweetheart; it is used in the essence of true love. I’m copying the article from the link at the bottom for all of you who don’t want to click. Please read, share on social media, spread the news in general, etc. This family is close to someone who is practically family to me so please please please share.

PLAINFIELD, Ind. – The search effort for a missing husband and father continues in the Pacific Ocean. Babar Suleman and his son Haris were in a single engine plane that crashed off the coast of the American Samoa. Rescue crews recovered Haris’s body shortly after the plane went down.

Daughter Hiba Suleman and a family friend Azher Khan made an emotional plea for help. They held a press conference in front of the Suleman family home Wednesday afternoon. The family made a plea for all resources to be deployed to the search area. They said divers were not able to reach the fuselage because the water is too deep.

Everyone is still holding out hope that Babar will be found alive. The family called him a fighter.

“We believe in hope, we believe in miracles, we believe in prayers,” said Azher Khan, family friend.

On Wednesday the U.S. Coast Guard resumed search operations for Babar Suleman using a C-130 aircraft. The plane took off from Air Station Barber’s Point in Hawaii.

Coast Guard officials said they are still investigating what caused the plane to crash. The father son duo were attempting to fly around the world to raise money for charity. They raised more than $500,000 dollars to help educate Pakistani school kids. Haris was also trying to break a record for being the youngest person to fly a single engine plane around the world in 30 days.

The family is also trying to raise awareness on social media by using the hash tag #BringBabarHome.

This is so important!

I never know what to ask and end up looking like a fool cause I don’t have a question prepared.

Am I the only one who gets kind of upset that Tumblr seems to care more about Nash Grier saying stupid shit than a civillian airplane most likely being shot with a missile and Israel basically invading Gaza? Maybe it’s because I’m Dutch and a lot of Dutch people died on that plane but it really just bothers me how selective Tumblr seems to be with what they freak out about.
